Truck with R500 000 worth of baby food hijacked in Olifantsfontein

Police had received a tip-off about a truck parked near Denel in Bonaero Park

MEMBERS of the Benoni Flying Squad arrested ten suspects on Tuesday afternoon after they were found in possession of a truck carrying baby food.

Police received a tip-off about a truck parked near Denel in Bonaero Park, with about two or three other cars.

The suspects were allegedly off-loading the baby food, worth about R500 000, from the truck into the vehicles.

According to Kempton police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, the suspects earlier hijacked the truck in on the R21 in Olifantsfontein.

“Upon further investigation, police also found a jamming device in the suspects’ possession,” Mtshali said.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 61, will appear in the Kempton Magistrate’s Court where they will face a charge of possession of stolen goods.

They will be further charged with truck hijacking and will appear at the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court in connection with those charges.

“The matter is being investigated by the Provincial Task Team that is currently handling all the truck hijackings that are prevalent in and around Gauteng,” Mtshali concluded.
