Gogo’s house flooded with sewage
A 67-year-old woman's house was flooded with sewage following a blockage in the line.
A blocked sewerage line has flooded a gogo’s house with faeces, leaving the woman desperate for help.
The 67-year-old woman has been battling with this problem for some time now and said it happens every year. Ms Augustina Modise said, “The sewerage manhole situated behind the outside rooms in my yard gets blocked whenever there’s heavy rain.”
“The municipality has failed to resolve my problem. It is blocked at the moment and I have been calling them for three days and no one came to help me,” she said.
Gogo Modise said she spent the night trying to sweep the faeces out and trying to prevent more from entering her house.
The sewage is also flowing into her neighbour’s yard.
“It leaves me frustrated and it affects my high blood pressure,” she said.
She said Clr Thema Andrew Sebola is unhelpful because she called him for help but she was left “hanging with uncertainty”.
“He has known about this problem for a long time. Nothing is done about it,” she said.
Gogo Modise contacted The Tembisan again on March 14 to report the “shoddy work done by water and sanitation” workers, who left a manhole cover inside the manhole.
“They left the concrete cover inside the manhole and instructed me not to let anyone inspect the manhole. They left it covered with a pallet,” she said.
When contacted by The Tembisan, Clr Sebola said he was aware of the woman’s problem and that it was attended to.
The councillor said he wasn’t aware of the “shoddy job” done at Ms Modise’s house.
“I will attend to this case to resolve the matter,” said Clr Sebola.
The Tembisan requested comment from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
