A 32-year-old man from Ecaleni was robbed of his VW Polo and other belongings on March 16.
Constable Patricia Mgijjima said the man was allegedly sitting in the car with his female friend in the early hours of the morning.
“They were approached by three unknown men, one of whom was armed with a firearm. Two of the men went to the passenger side while the one with the firearm opened the driver’s door,” she said.
“He demanded the victim’s wristwatch, ring, cellular phone and wallet.”
According to Const Mgijjima, many of the hijackings occur during the late hours of the day while people sit in their cars.
“Suspects point firearms at the victims and sometimes they are raped and robbed,” she said.
The SAPS urges residents to not sit in their vehicles and to therefore avoid becoming the target of criminals.
