Hijackers crash car during high speed chase

The metro police caught up with the vehicle just 8km outside Bronkhorstspruit

THREE hijackers were arrested after they crashed the hijacked vehicle in which they were fleeing from the metro police.

The incident happened on March 17 on the R25 towards Bronkhorstspruit, metro police spokesman Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago said.

Equestrian unit members received a “look-out” alert for a Toyota Avanza hijacked in Etwatwa at around 6am. The tracker picked up the vehicle moving in the direction of Tembisa at which point the signal was briefly lost.

At around 7am, the signal of the stolen Avanza was picked up showing the vehicle moving towards Bapsfontein and later taking the R25 towards Bronkhorstspruit.

“The metro police caught up with the vehicle just 8km outside Bronkhorstspruit. When officers put on their blue lights to indicate to the Avanza to stop, the Avanza sped off and a chase ensued.

“The suspects lost control of the vehicle and it rolled. All three suspects bolted on foot into the nearby bushes. Two suspects were immediately arrested as they could not outrun the metro police.

“The third suspect, found hiding in the bushes, was arrested when Bronkhorstspruit SAPS joined the metro police in the search,” said Kgasago.

Both the recovered vehicle and a firearm with its serial number filed off and loaded with 12 live rounds, were booked in at Bronkhorstspruit Police Station.

The trio, aged 27, 37 and 35, were charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, Kgasago said.
