Hitch-hiker hijacks unsuspecting driver

One shot was fired but fortunately no injuries were sustained by the victim

THE metro police recovered three stolen vehicles in the space of an hour on Monday.

EMPD Equestrian and Loss Control & Investigations Unit members acted swiftly when they picked up signals of the three stolen vehicles. All three vehicles were recovered between 5.15am and 6.30am, Lt-Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said.

A silver VW Polo was stolen when the perpetrators stole the keys from the owner who was sitting in a bar enjoying drinks. The equestrian unit members tracked the vehicle to 15th Avenue in Alexandra where it was found abandoned.

A Toyota Hilux driver asking for directions to Bronkhorstspruit gave a lift to a person who promised to show him the way as he was also going in that direction. Little did the driver know that the hitch-hiker was with two accomplices travelling in another vehicle.

“The vehicle forced the Toyota Hilux to stop and the driver was held at gunpoint and his vehicle hijacked. One shot was fired but fortunately no injuries were sustained by the victim. The hijacked Toyota Hilux was recovered abandoned in Storm Street in Norkem Park,” Kgasago said.

The third vehicle recovered, a VW Polo Vivo, hijacked from the owner in Tembisa, was found abandoned near Las Vegas Supermarket in Winnie Mandela, Tembisa.
