AN alleged fraudster was caught in the act at the Edgars store at Festival Mall.
According to police, the 34-year-old man tried to use an Edgars membership card stolen from someone who lives in Mpumalanga.
The incident happened on Tuesday (March 22) at about 3.30pm.
“An alert Edgars employee was helping a customer who said he wanted to replace his store card. While the employee tried to verify the customer’s information on the system, she noticed the customer was not the original account holder,” police spokesman Capt Jethro Mtshali explained.
The employee then called the real account holder, who confirmed he lives in Ermelo, Mpumalanga.
The employee then called the shop’s fraud department to intervene.
“When the suspect noticed that the store was on to him, he grabbed his identity document and tried to run away, but could not match the speed of the employee, who managed to catch him. The police were called to the scene.”
The suspect will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon on fraud-related charges.
