Men wearing bulletproof vests rob brothers of R35 000

The suspects told the victims they were on their way to the police station but then travelled in a different direction.

Two men were allegedly robbed of R35 000 while returning from Phumlani Mall on Saturday, March 19.

The Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, said the two men, who are brothers, went to one of the banks at Phumlani Mall to withdraw money to pay employees.

“On arrival, they withdrew R40 000. While there, one of the men gave his brother R10 000. On their way back to Ivory Park, the two were approached by the occupants of an Opel Corsa with an unknown registration number. The two occupants of the car were wearing bulletproof vests. They exited the vehicle and told the men to get into the car,” said W/O Sekgobela.

The suspects told the victims they were on their way to the police station but then travelled in a different direction.

“The vehicle was moving slowly and the complainant‘s brother managed to escape and screamed for help. The suspects then sped up and drove off, with one of the victims still inside the vehicle. The suspects took R35 000 and dropped him off at an open veld in Winnie Mandela,” said W/O Sekgobela.

The SAPS offered some safety tips when banking:

  •  Instead of withdrawing large sums of cash to pay employees, have their banking details and transfer the money into a bank account.
  •  After withdrawing money, avoid being followed and do not count or share the money in public.
  •  Be alert and watch out for people following you after you have withdrawn money.
