Gunmen stopped by police

"When police approached the area, they noticed someone pointing a firearm at an unknown man and then fire one shot."

A 22-year-old man was shot and killed on Friday last week on George Nyanga Street in Tembisa.
Constable Patricia Mgijima said it was alleged by members of SAPS Tactical Response Team, who were patrolling in Tembisa, that they were stopped by a member of the public.
Constable Mgijima said the person alerted the police that there was a group of about six men who threatened people on the street with a firearm.
“The police urgently responded. When they approached the area, they noticed someone pointing a firearm at an unknown man and then fire one shot,” said Constable Mgijima.
She said the police verbally instructed him to put the firearm down but instead he turned and pointed the weapon at the police.
“Police fired and he was shot and killed,” said Constable Mgijima.
“The firearm he was carrying fell and his friend picked it up and also pointed the weapon towards the police. Police again fired shots and the man was shot and injured.  He was taken to Tembisa Hospital under police guard. One firearm with five live rounds was booked in at Tembisa SAPS,” said Constable Mgijima.

“The injured suspect will appear before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court when he is discharged on charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm,” said Const Mgijima.
