SHOOTING UPDATE: Darkness gives victim time to react

The house was dark inside as the four entered

TWO suspects who were shot and killed in Van Riebeek Park on Thursday evening were attempting to rob the house of a private firearm instructor when they met their fate.

It is alleged the owner shot and killed them in a twist of events.

According to standby spokesman for the Ekurhuleni North Cluster, Const Mokete Serakwana, the incident took place at around 8pm on De Villiers Street.

“The owner of the house was sitting on the veranda with a friend when two suspects appeared and pointed firearms at them, ordering them into the house,” explained Serakwana.

She said the house was dark inside as the four entered. The owner, believed to be in his 40s, managed to reach for his gun behind a clock.

“When the suspects noticed there was movement from the victims in the dark, it is alleged they fired shots but missed. The owner of the house shot the one suspect in the house. The other suspect tried to flee the scene but was shot outside,” Serakwana added.

Both suspects in their twenties died on the scene.

Serakwana said cases of attempted house robbery, attempted murder, possession of ammunition and an inquest docket were being investigated.
