VIDEO: Freedom after 4 hours of intense rescue operations
The horse was taken away by the Society for Animals in Distress
AFTER hours of digging and grinding through meters of earth and concrete, rescue workers finally managed to free a horse stuck in a storm water drain inspection hole earlier today.
The 18-month-old grey horse was freed after almost four hours. The rescue mission began at about 9am and lasted to about 1 just outside Tembisa Railway Station.
Several emergency and rescue units, including Ekurhuleni, Pretoria and Joburg emergency services and fire and rescue units, Kempton Park SAPS, Gauteng 911, the police’s search and rescue unit, Netcare 911’s Rapid Specialised Extrication Unit and others were all on-board to help save the traumatised animal.
Various machines had to be used during the rescue mission, including a carborandum cutter, a concrete chainsaw, a generator, a TLB tractor and a jack hammer.
Netcare 911 paramedics assisted the team by supplying them with a generator and stethoscope to monitor the horse’s heart rate, spokesman Athlenda Mathe confirmed.
According to the horse’s owner, it is possible the horse might have been stuck in the hole for up to two days, as it went missing three days ago.
The horse was taken away by the Society for Animals in Distress, who are based in Midrand, where she will receive medical care at their facility.
