According to Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, equestrian unit members were alerted to a truck standing on the side of the R50 in Bromberg at 7am on Tuesday. The truck was reported stolen at Brighton Beach in KwaZulu-Natal with a cargo of shoes valued at R170 000.

On confirming the location of the truck with the vehicle tracking company, the equestrian members were joined by the metro police’s loss control unit to beef up numbers.

“A yard in Bapsfontein was raided and some of the shoes were recovered. Four suspects, including a woman, were arrested. A thorough search of the premises revealed 20 mag wheels (R40 000) confirmed to have been a load in a truck that was hijacked on Monday morning in Alberton. Fourteen thousand Rand (R14 000) cash was found on the suspects which they claimed was money paid towards rental of the yard to keep the loot,” Kgasago said.

The four Malawian nationals, aged between 24 and 32, were charged with possession of suspected stolen goods at Welbekend Police Station. All the recovered goods and the cash confiscated were booked in at the same police station.
