Lebanese nabbed with gold worth R7-m at airport

SARS customs officials detained the goods for further investigations

A Lebanese man en route to Dubai from OR Tambo International Airport was arrested by South African Revenue Service (SARS) custom officials when officials discovered he was carrying over R7 million worth of gold bars in his luggage.

The discovery was made on Sunday, SARS spokesman, Sandile Memela, said.

“The man was leaving the country without proper documentation. His luggage was scanned and irregular images were identified. A hand search found these to be 17 rectangular and three circular gold bars estimated at R7 033 600,” said Memela.

Each bar weighed 23kg.

The man was handed over to members of the South African Police Service.

SARS customs officials detained the goods for further investigations.
