Community helps apprehend robbers

The victim, Mr Jeremo Bekele, said he was inside the spaza shop when the suspects pointed a firearm at him.

The Tembisa SAPS arrested two men, aged 23 and 25, after they allegedly committed a business robbery, attempted murder and a car hijacking in Winnie Mandela Zone 4.

The incident occurred at around 1pm on Thursday last week.

It is believed the foreign national spaza shop owners were offloading stock items when the three suspects approached them.

The victim, Mr Jeremo Bekele, said he was inside the spaza shop when the suspects pointed a firearm at him.

“They fired three shots and my brother (28) was shot in the thigh. The suspects demanded money, airtime and cigarettes. They tried to escape with the bakkie that we use for stock. There was still a lot of stock inside the bakkie. The suspects also took our Samsung phone,” said Mr Bekele.

Mr Bekele said community members in Winnie Mandela Zone 4 helped them and called the police.

“The community gave chase. When the police arrived the community was still chasing the suspects. We are happy with how things ended because the perpetrators were arrested with the help of the community,” said Mr Bekele.

The Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, said the two men were arrested. A case of business robbery, attempted murder and car hijacking was opened.

“The SAPS recovered two revolvers with live ammunition. One revolver had three live rounds and the other had one live round. Three cartridges were found. The suspects failed to produce licenses for the firearms. A bakkie was also recovered with the stolen goods. The third suspect managed to escape and is still on the run. We are appealing for any information that could lead to his arrest,” said W/O Sekgobela.

W/O Sekgobela said the victim who was shot in the thigh was transported to hospital.
