Robber threatens to shoot high school children
The car the suspect was driving at the time was traced to his father
Three learners from Birchleigh High School were threatened with death on Wednesday if they did not hand over their cellphones to a robber.
The three, a 13-year-old girl and two 15-year-old boys, were accosted by the man, who threatened to shoot them, at 11.30am in Birchleigh-North.
According to Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, the perpetrator took three Samsung S4 Minis from the learners. Thinking quickly, the learners took down the registration number of the red bakkie the robber was travelling in.
At 4pm the EMPD Loss Control Unit verified the address at Isivana Section in Tembisa as per the registration of the vehicle used by the 22-year-old suspect.
“Around 7pm the metro police visited the address. Although the suspect was not home, the father cooperated with the metro police and rang his son to come home. On his arrival he was arrested,” Kgasago said.
At 10.40pm two of the three cellphones were recovered from two individuals at Makhulong and Motsu sections in Tembisa from whom statements were obtained. The third cellphone was allegedly sold to a shop-owner for R600.
Charges of common robbery and possession of suspected stolen property were registered against the suspect at Norkem Park Police Station.
