Security officer tackles suspect to the ground at shopping centre

The suspect was arrested for theft

A security officer became a hero on Wednesday, June 8 when he managed to stop a suspect in his tracks at the Pick n Pay shopping complex on Soutpansberg Drive in Van Riebeeck Park, managing to return a stolen cellphone and tablet.

MML Security operations manager, Dewald Lategan, said the suspect went into Gadget Fix in the complex, where he distracted the female sales attendant with a fake R200 note.

“The suspect then grabbed her cellphone and tablet and started running. She pressed the panic button and screamed for help,” explained Lategan.
