The event hosted special guests such as Miss Earth South Africa semi-finalist, Katlego Ratshwene.
The second annual Tembisa Chess Tournament, hosted by the Tembisa Chess Club, took place at the Child Academy Private School on June 16.
This year the tournament hosted about 150 participants from different neighbourhoods around Gauteng.
Chess players as far as Vosloorus, Pretoria, Alexander, Midrand, Daveyton and all around Tembisa took part in the event.
The event hosted special guests such as Miss Earth South Africa semi-finalist, Katlego Ratshwene, who motivated the youth with regards to academics and education.
Local schools that participated this year were Tshepisa, Sedibeng, Siziba, Marulani, Nxuweni, Shukumani, Welamlambo, Ikusasa and Sir Pierre van Ryneveld, which is based in Kempton Park.
The founder of the Tembisa Chess Club, Mr Vusimusi Mokone, said the event was marvellous to watch as they had young people challenging each other in the chess game.
“The competition was very tough as they all showed dedication to win the game. We are pleased with how young people responded to this year’s tournament. It was indeed a great lesson to the beloved chess players,” said Mr Mokone.
In the open competition, the first winner was Leslie Matsambu who retained his championship title. The second runner-up was Bukhu Nkushubana and third runner-up Matthews NdlovuWinners. All were awarded trophies, medals and certificates.
Vusumuzi said, “With this tournament we were able to collect clothes and shoes which will be donated to an orphanage on Mandela Day next month.”
Mr Mokone thanked local businesses who supported them in making the event a great one for the people and the community.
“We are still pleading to all who are willing to sponsor and assist this initiative to build a strong chess culture in Tembisa,” said Mr Mokone.
