Local schools join marimba festival
This year the festival will be held in Benoni at Tom Newby School, which is a first for Benoni

TWO Kempton Park schools, Aston Manor Primary and Curro Serengeti, will take part in the annual International Marimba and Steelpan Festival.
The event is curated by Education Africa, in partnership with Tom Newby School of Benoni, with the support of the Department of Arts and Culture.
This year the festival is part of the Africa Month initiative, which looks at promoting social cohesion not only among South Africans but Africa as a continent and the world at large.
The event takes place on July 30 and 31 and is a great family weekend out.
Though the main focal point of the festival is a series of competitions, which has about 1 600 participants/performers this year, it is well-rounded as there are fun activities for the whole family.
The festival has a little craft market where one can purchase interesting musical items as well as all sorts of crafts, and meals.
The marimba and steelpan competitions are divided into various age groups and categories as part of the main event with hands-on workshops on a variety of traditional music topics.
A massed marimba and steelpan experience in the main venue is not to be missed, as well as performances on marimbas and steelpans by leading artists in various other venues.
If you have always wanted to be part of a drumming team building event then the massed drumming experience is for you.
This year the festival will be held in Benoni at Tom Newby School, which is a first for Benoni.
