Thembisa learners benefit from nationwide school shoe campaign

Engen, in collaboration with local dealers, visited Masiqhakaze Secondary School in Thembisa on April 22 as part of the initiative.

The Back-to-School School Shoe Campaign continues to support disadvantaged children, expanding its reach this winter by donating 900 pairs of school shoes to primary schools in underprivileged communities across the country.

The campaign aims to address one of the barriers to education by restoring learners’ confidence and dignity through the provision of proper school shoes.

Engen CSI manager Olwethu Mdabula said that for many learners, school shoes can be a barrier to attending school confidently every day. Through the campaign, the company hopes to restore dignity and create an environment where every child feels included and valued.

“Education remains one of Engen’s key social investment priorities. As winter approaches, we recognise that when learners have the essentials they need, they are better equipped to succeed,” said Mdabula.

Mdabula also praised the school for its improving pass rate and commended Masiqhakaze Secondary School for being one of the few schools in Thembisa intentionally encouraging learners to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.

This has further strengthened the collaboration between the company and the school, with hopes of extending the partnership beyond the Back-to-School School Shoe Campaign to include STEM support and exposing learners to opportunities and skills that can improve employability and create future employment opportunities.

The 2026 campaign successfully reached children across several provinces, including Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.

Engen believes education is a powerful driver of change, and its annual investment in communities forms part of the company’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focus on quality education, sustainable communities and reducing inequalities.
