Easy moves to defend yourself – learn how

He will be training students and interesting members of the public on July 27 and 28 at Hoërskool Jeugland

HAVE you ever wondered what you would do if someone held a knife to your throat or a gun to your head, or how to escape a choke- or stranglehold?

Israeli-based krav maga master instructor, Moshe Katz, is coming to Kempton Park on invitation of an East Rand-based krav maga training school, Righteous Warrior Krav Maga.

He will be training students and interested members of the public on July 27 and 28 at Hoërskool Jeugland. Guests will be taught how to defend themselves against a series of handgun and knife holdups, knife attacks and blunt object assaults as well as anti-rape defences.

Katz travels the globe teaching people krav maga techniques to defend themselves. “Krav maga” means close quarter (contact) combat. These techniques are easy to learn, easy to apply and easy to remember under stress.

Krav maga techniques are based on the body’s natural reflexes which are already established within each one of us. According to Katz, people shouldn’t have to train for years to be able to defend themselves.

Krav maga is based on the principle that self-defence should be intuitive, easy to learn and effective in a crisis. Complex manoeuvres are not helpful during a stressful attack. Krav maga training is said to be “the perfect self-defence system for imperfect people”.

The origins of krav maga can be traced back to the 1930s when Jewish communities were persecuted in Eastern Europe. It’s philosophies of combat continued to be observed in the training of Israeli special forces when the country was formed in the 1940s after World War II.

With the establishment of the State of Israel, krav maga was adopted as the official fighting style of the Israeli Defence Force and the Israeli police force. Today it is taught all over the world to security forces due to its simplicity and effectiveness. It can even be seen in many Hollywood action movies.

Krav maga is simple and effective self-defence for real-life South African violent situations. It is not a sport but will help you and your family to escape with your lives.

FH Havinga and Barko Engelbrecht instruct krav maga schools in Boksburg and Kempton Park on a Wednesday and Thursday. For more information, contact Elmarie at rwkm@aserac.org or 011-023-7376.
