EMPD nails 23 drunk drivers on Ekurhuleni freeways

All the arrested drivers were charged for driving on a public road while under the influence of intoxicating liquor

HORRIFIC accidents, reckless driving in the form of excessive speeding, overtaking dangerously, inconsiderate driving and on-ramping and exiting unsafely on the freeways prompted Ekurhuleni Metro Police’s freeway unit to focus on these offences the past weekend.

The special operations were carried out from Friday to Sunday between 6pm and midnight, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said.

On the R21 at the Voortrekker turnoff 13 drivers suspected of having taken one glass too many while driving were arrested – 12 on Friday night and one on Saturday night.

Saturday saw the officers setting up a roadblock on the N12 at the Putfontein turnoff in Benoni where eight drivers were arrested for drunk driving and booked in at Benoni Police Station.

Over and above this, one driver was arrested in Brakpan on Saturday and on Sunday a driver was arrested in Alberton.

All the arrested drivers were charged for driving on a public road while under the influence of intoxicating liquor at the respective police stations and were expected to appear in court on Monday.
