Metro police sweep on Blaauwpan revellers

Roving road blocks were also carried out in the CBD

IN addition to its operations on highways over the weekend to catch drunk drivers, the metro police also conducted road blocks in Kempton Park CBD with the same purpose.

Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said 16 metro police officers from the Kempton Park precinct on Friday night conducted roving road blocks in the CBD where 18 drivers were apprehended for drunk driving. Six more were arrested on Sunday afternoon near Blaauwpan in Bonaero Park.

“The Friday operation was carried out between 6pm and the early hours of Saturday. The officers also swooped on Blaauwpan on Sunday afternoon where six drivers were nabbed,” he said.

All the arrested drivers were charged with driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor at Kempton Park Police Station and were expected to appear in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
