Swift bakkie owner catches thief at taxi rank

The thief was caught walking away just after stealing from the bakkie

A 34-year-old man wasn’t so lucky after he was caught with stolen goods while his partners in crime managed to get away.

The suspect was caught at the Kempton taxi rank walking away just after stealing from a bakkie with his accomplices.

According to Kempton police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, the owner of the bakkie had parked his vehicle on the side of the road while he went to run some errands on July 26.

“The bakkie had a canopy which contained a toolbox, drilling machine, extension cables and three fire extinguishers,” Mtshali said.

“When he returned to his bakkie, he found the canopy had been broken into and the property inside had been stolen. He quickly enquired from people nearby who told him the suspects ran towards the taxi rank.”

The fast-acting driver quickly went to the taxi rank and spotted one of the suspects carrying some of the goods from his bakkie. He yelled for help from security and together they chased down the suspect.

His accomplices managed to get away.

The suspect has been charged with theft out of a motor vehicle.
