Rhino horn valued at R1.5-million confiscated at OR Tambo

Drugs worth R700 000 has also been found

The Hawks at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday arrested a Chinese national who was found to be in possession of 10 rhino horns, 84 stick ornaments made out of rhino horns and 41 bangles with an estimated value of R1.5 million.

The suspect, aged 48, was about to board a flight to Hong Kong when he was nabbed. He claimed to have acquired the rhino horns in Maputo, Mozambique. He will face charges of trafficking in rhino horns when he appears in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Still at OR Tambo International Airport, a Tanzanian national was arrested on Thursday with 10kg of ephedrine valued at about R700 000. The 46-year-old man had just landed from Abu-Dhabi when his bag was searched and two packets containing the drugs were found.

He will also appear in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of dealing in drugs.
