An SAPS member was assaulted by a suspect on August 20.
Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said SAPS members were on patrol, driving a marked police vehicle, when they stopped a white Ford Focus with three male occupants.
“The driver exited the vehicle and he told the officers that the registration disc of the vehicle was in the boot,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.
The driver went with the police official to the back of the car while his SAPS colleague was keeping guard.
“The two occupants inside the car then jumped out and grabbed the SAPS officer. They took his firearm and assaulted him. They then started shooting towards the police,” he said.
Capt Ralidzhivha said officers managed to escaped from the scene.
The suspects took the keys to the police officers’ vehicle before fleeing in the Ford Focus.
“The police members were slightly injured. They were transported to hospital for treatment.”
Capt Ralidzhivha said two cellular phones and a driver’s license were found at the scene.
“It seems that during the struggle with the SAPS member for his firearm, the cellular phones fell.”
Capt Ralidzhivha said community members tried to chase the suspects but they managed to evade a citizens’ arrest.
