Birthday boy and girl celebrate at Herfsland fête
Allettha Aspinall turned 98, while Alwyn Kotze was turning 92
HERFSLAND held its annual fête on Saturday when the elderly residents, along with friends and family, gathered to enjoy food, drinks and a variety of handmade crafts and other items to buy.
Allettha Aspinall celebrated her 98th birthday on the day. She has been living at Herfsland for 18 years.
“I feel very privileged today,” she said, before answering her very busy cellphone, which was bombarded by calls from well-wishers.
What has kept the birthday girl strong for so long? “Hard work, needlework and knitting, as well as eating,” she joked. Her favourite things to eat are ice-cream and sweets.
Aspinall says she is very healthy and has a clear head. She has no major health challenges but cannot walk. The mother, grandmother and great-grandmother had three children, two daughters and a son.
Her only son died last year. He was 56 years old and was living with Down’s Syndrome.
Aspinall’s daughters are aged 67 and 60. She has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Asked if she was excited about approaching the big 100, she replied: “I’m not sure, because I’m worried about my health at that age.”
Alwyn Kotze turned 92 on Sunday. He has four children, two sons and two daughters. One child passed away.
He has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
