Modderfontein Golden Oldies spread Christmas cheer

OVER the last two weeks, the Modderfontein Golden Oldies hockey team spread some Christmas cheer, by donating to various deserving people and organisations.
“Every year, we host a golf day to raise funds, so that we can assist people who need wheelchairs or any other medical assistance; or provide financial help to families or organisations in need of financial support,” Modderfontein Golden Oldies’ Shen Reid explained.
One of the team’s beneficiaries was little Monya van Wyk, who’s suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
The team donated a substantial amount of money on December 10, towards the fundraising effort by Beauty Esteem to raise money for the 3-year-old girl.
“Our delegation who attended the fundraiser at Beauty Esteem, was able to meet Monya and her parents and we were touched by what this little girl has had to endure so far – but also how well she is coping through it all. We feel privileged to have been able to be part of this fundraiser. We feel privileged to have been able to be a part of this initiative.”
The day before that, the team delivered 80 food hampers to the Gerald Fitzpatrick Home in Bertrams, Johannesburg.
This is a home for ladies who have no families – and whose sole income is the monthly government pension fund of R1400.
“Almost that entire amount goes towards paying for their accommodation, at the home. It was gratifying for us to see how thankful these ladies were, for the hampers they received.”
The team delivered clothing on December 7 to the Methodist Church in Bedfordview, which they will distribute to deserving people.
They’re at present also negotiating to secure a wheelchair for a 13-year-old boy, who’s paralysed and in desperate need of a wheelchair.
“The Golden Oldies strive to raise money through our annual golf days, so that we can give back as in the instances aforementioned; and provide some relief to those who assist the less fortunate. Over the past 11 years, we have raised more than R500 000 – which has enabled us to help many deserving people. We hope we can continue our fundraising efforts and support many more deserving people, in the years ahead.”
