Down’s Syndrome patient’s medical bill piles up
His medical bill is already in excess of R250 000
THE family of a 56-year-old Van Riebeeck Park Down’s Syndrome man faces astronomical medical bills after he had been admitted to ICU with pneumonia on December 17.
Without medical aid and only Denis-John Mc Geary’s 83-year-old mother Doreen’s small pension to assist, they do not know how they will be able to pay for his care.
His medical bill is already in excess of R250 000.
His sister, Diane Williams, who has been taking care of her brother for years, has set up a fund to help raise the necessary funds.
Denis-John has been on a ventilator since being admitted to the private hospital in December. From there he was put onto an oxygen machine that supplies him with high volumes of oxygen to assist his breathing.
He was taken off of the intensive air flow oxygen machine on January 4 and was put onto a normal flow of oxygen with which he is really struggling to breathe.
According to Diane they were advised by medical staff that when he eventually gets discharged, he would require home nursing or a frail care facility.
“I am trying to help them by raising funds to help assist my mother and brother with the burden of the exorbitant medical bills as they want to move him out of the hospital due to lack of funds.”
As a young man, Denis-John enjoyed participating in activities such as races, swimming competitions and choirs at a facility in Witbank. He has always had an intense passion for music and art and loved drawing, colouring-in and painting until just recently when he couldn’t anymore because his condition started to deteriorate.
