Food parcels and a washing machine for Christmas

The store's public relations officer, Mr Tom Makhura, said that although they did not meet the target of 50 food parcels, it was an empowering experience to see needy families being supported and given hope.

The Pick n Pay store at Swazi Inn, in partnership with the Voice of Tembisa, eased the burden for 22 families over the festive season as part of a community initiative to distribute food parcels.

The store’s public relations officer, Mr Tom Makhura, said that although they did not meet the target of 50 food parcels, it was an empowering experience to see needy families being supported and given hope.

“Our aim was to at least donate to 50 families and this year we are hoping to start the initiative earlier so that we can raise enough food donations for the parcels,” he said.

He added that they are aiming to alleviate poverty and empower the community of Tembisa with this initiative and shoppers who donated food items were automatically entered into a lucky draw for some wonderful prizes.

“We not only running a business, but also care about our community. Where there is a need to help, we will give a hand. This initiative was part of the store giving back to its customers. We are thankful to everyone who contributed in the initiative,” he said.

Ivory Park resident Ms Caroline Mapurunga was the first-prize winner of the lucky draw and walked away with a KIC washing machine.

The second place winner received a microwave and three other shoppers won food hampers.

Ms Mapuranga thanked the store for her dream prize of a washing machine.

“I’ve always wanted a washing machine. It is a dream come true! I contributed to the food parcel initiative and it rewarded me with a washing machine. I am grateful for being the winner and will continue to support this initiative.”

A highlight of the day was Xhonga artist Eva Baloi who entertained the crowd with her group of young dancers.
