Tembisa youngster gets Peermont Education Trust bursary

Ms Makhanya was selected from hundreds of applicants and had to make it through a stringent selection and interview process with a panel of judges before receiving her official scholarship letter at an induction function at Emperors Palace on Friday morning, January 27.

Over the past 15 years Peermont has been funding students with full bursaries for tertiary education.

In 2017 one of the ten lucky candidates awarded a prestigious bursary from the Peermont Education Trust (PET) is Phumzile Makhanya of Tembisa.

Ms Makhanya was selected from hundreds of applicants and had to make it through a stringent selection and interview process with a panel of judges before receiving her official scholarship letter at an induction function at Emperors Palace on Friday morning, January 27.

Having matriculated from Ivory Park Secondary School at the end of last year with six distinctions she will be start her BSc. Pharmacy degree at the University of the Witwatersrand this year thanks to the trust.

Apart from having their tuition and accommodation expenses covered, these fortunate students will receive workshop and psychological support to sustain them through the academic year.

“Over the years we have found that we are able to increase our graduation rate by offering learners additional support throughout the year.

To this end the trust has an impressive 85% graduation rate. This is exceptional considering that the learners hail from township schools, where the national graduation rate is 22%,” comments trust manager, Jenny Findlay.

“When I got the call for the bursary I was so excited as I was so nervous waiting for a response. I felt relieved and happy that I was going to be part of the Peermont Education Trust, which I really hoped and prayed for. I was excited that now my funding for tertiary education was settled and now I am looking forward to starting the journey to fulfilling my dreams,” said Ms Makhanya.
