Officers come to diabetic’s (77) rescue in squatter camp
'I lost my way and ended up in a squatter camp nearby and lapsed into a coma'
WHAT could have turned into a nightmare for a Benoni resident last week had a happy ending thanks to three caring men, two of whom were Kempton Park SAPS officers.
Leon Liebenberg was so grateful that he visited Kempton Park Police Station on Friday to personally thank the two officers again and to hand over a gift of appreciation.
Liebenberg had dropped off his domestic worker in Pomona on Wednesday afternoon last week. “Driving off, I suffered a totally unexpected and serious hypoglycaemia attack (low blood sugar).”
“I lost my way and ended up in a squatter camp nearby and lapsed into a coma. After recovering some hours later, I was told the following had happened:
“A gentleman, David Sibuyi, saw me and decided to stay with me to protect me until help arrived.

“Fortunately, two policemen, Sgt Nelson Ramodike and Sgt Thembisile Mgoro, were patrolling the area and stopped to offer assistance. Using my cellphone, they managed to contact my daughter, Karen, living in Pomona, and forwarded location co-ordinates to her,” Liebenberg said.
“She told him how to start treating me while she rushed over. Sgt Thembisile managed to get a tin of Coke and started forcing this down my throat. This was a slow process, as I was not able to offer any help.
“Soon my blood sugar started rising, resulting in a total recovery.
“The two policemen were called back to the station as it was the end of their shift, but they sent the vehicle back and stayed on. As I was feeling incapable of driving back home, they offered to drive me home to Benoni, from where they returned to Kempton Park Police Station.
“On Friday I called in at the station to report their unselfish behaviour to Colonel Van Olst. Thanks guys. I owe you my life!”
