Arts learner aims high

Mashemong based artist Moleko aims to reach great heights and become a prominent artist in the country.

For some, the arts is just fun – but this is not the case for Naledi Moleko (17), who sees the arts as a career.

The Mashemong based artist aims to reach great heights and become a prominent artist in the country.

This Grade 12 learner at the National School of the Arts in Braamfontein says she has already come a long way on her journey to becoming an artist.

“Back in the day I fell in love with art and used a pencil and paper almost every day to draw and write poems while I was in Grade 3,” she said.

“I recall when I fell in love with art – I would lock myself in my room and draw whatever comes to mind. I did not know what it was to get bored because I always had something to do. I started writing poems in Grade 5 and they just rhymed in my head and I couldn’t resist my pencil and book. From then I discovered music and started rapping. I used to be a choir member in school and church. All of these arts I found easy to achieve,” said Moleko.

The talented teenager, who was raised by her father, said she grew up knowing one does not need to be a specific age in order to be a successful person.

“I fight for what I believe in,” added Moleko.

She released her music video “Lolo” last year and is hoping to release a new album this year.

Moleko also auditioned for the SA’s Got Talent show last year and has signed up with the Ghetto Castings agency to further her acting career.

When asked how she tackles arts and education at the same time, Moleko said it isn’t that challenging to study and continue making her mark in the arts because she is an artist by nature.

“I love my education but that does not prevent me from excelling in the arts. I always coach myself to learn how to balance my schoolwork and art. I go all out to excel,” said Moleko.
