Traffic chaos clears up as taxis are being impounded – residents stuck
The R21 south between Olifantsfontain Road and the airport was also at a standstill
SO far 16 taxis had been impounded by the metro police following this morning’s metered taxi protest on the R24 and traffic seems to be clearing up.
Traffic on roads in and around Kempton Park became a nightmare as motorists tried to find alternative routes to their destinations as a result of the metered taxi protest on the R24 this morning.
A Croydon resident said she could not leave her driveway as a result of the backed-up traffic through the suburb. Another said CR Swart Drive has also turned into a traffic mess.
Another motorist had been stuck in traffic on Atlas Road going towards Benoni.
The R21 south between Olifantsfontain Road and the airport was also at a standstill.
OR Tambo International Airport advised passengers to use the R21 towards Boksburg as an alternative route, past Emperors Palace.
These are some comments from our readers:
Mel Fox: “I see it says situation being monitored by police etc. Why are they not intervening and attempting to break up the protest?????? If we condone all this it will just happen more and more. Bet if we blocked highway to protest etolls it’d be cleared incredibly quickly !!!!”
Willy Carrington: “What has uber got to do with the people that has to go and work. Go and protest at your minister of transport’s home!!!”
Meryl Benecke Foster: “Our daughter has been sitting in that traffic, very close to the protesters since early this morning. Frustrating as hell. I believe people are walking to OR Tambo.”
Marilyn Boyter: “SAPS should have moved & impounded the taxis & arrest the protesters. Yawn would have taken a night bulldozer & cleared the area. Normal honest working citizens are trying to get to work. They should go protest at the minister & president’s homes or offices. No brains.”
