The My Maths Buddy 1 Book 1 Learner Project offers learners the opportunity to succeed in mathematics, as was shown at Peter Zongwane Primary School recently.
The project is an initiative of the South African Mathematics Foundation.
“We have proven that maths standards can be raised within weeks by introducing an understanding of maths terminology to learners in the most effective way possible,” said Paul Sondergaard, senior consultant for the One Book One Learner Project.
“A truism in life is that if you understand something really well, it is unlikely that you would fail at it.”
On this basis, the project’s sole aim is the understanding of the language of maths.
This reinforces the teachers’ ability to keep learners interested and improve application and thus results.
A round of workshops was held at Peter Zongwane Primary School and the My Maths Buddy maths dictionary was introduced.
All the maths teachers attended workshops so they can lead the application of the My Maths Buddy.
Grade 6 and 7 learners all received copies of the book, learned how to use it and discovered the importance of maths in their lives during the workshops.
Mrs Virginia Mohotoane, the Maths HOD at Peter Zongwane Primary, said, “The My Maths Buddy dictionary is excellent, user-friendly and easy for learners to understand. We are using it as a remedial reference. The learners are now understanding the Maths language and concepts. I now want every learner in the school to have a copy of this dictionary.”
The project will monitor the use of My Maths Buddy, its impact and results at the school for the next few months.
