IN today’s economic climate, it is difficult to give money or specific items to charity. However, sometimes the smallest item can help a person in a big way.
Solid Foundations Primary School and Shangri-La Academy heard about a need for wheelchairs.
These two schools have been collecting bottle caps and bread tags which have been given to an organisation that will melt these items down to make seed trays, picture frames and many other plastic items.
The profit from these items goes towards purchasing the wheelchairs. For one wheelchair the schools needed to collect 450kg of bottle caps or 50kg of bread tags.
Solid Foundations and Shangri-la learners and teachers have been diligently collecting since the first term. It is a lovely charity to collect for because it doesn’t cost anything.
Most families purchase more than one bottle of milk or loaf of bread a week. It also takes the responsibility away from parents and enables children to use their initiative to collect these items.
One child who lives in a townhouse complex, got the entire complex to collect bottle caps and bread tags. Other children spoke to their neighbours and relatives.
Some children asked their parents to take them to various restaurants and asked the restaurant owners to collect their bottle caps and bread tags. Some even cleaned other school fields when they attended sports events there.
All these ingenious ideas help to develop responsible adults. Both schools where thrilled at the positive response from all the children and staff.
In total, the two schools collected two-and-a half refuse bags of bread tags and 35 refuse bags of bottle caps.
They are excited about the hearts they have touched with their collections. They found out that they have been able to donate two wheelchairs to needy people as a result of their efforts..
