Soccer legends give back to the aged at Tembisa Old Age Home

The local football lovers donated food parcels, bath mats and cleaning detergents.

As part of observing the 67 Minutes of Mandela Day, local footballers under Tembisa Legend Sports Development visited senior citizens at the Tembisa Old Age Home on July 21.

The local football lovers donated food parcels, bath mats and cleaning detergents.

In last year’s initiative, they donated 50 blankets and a flat-screen television to the elderly.

Former Supersport United and Orlando Pirates midfield Mafika “Cavaan” Sibeko said they adopted the home last year and pledged to continue to help where possible.

“This is part of giving back to the community we were born and raised in. As football players, we are also helping youngsters to develop. We are trying to be part and parcel of the community and want to bring our people together,” added Sibeko.

Speaking on behalf of the elderly, Maud Sebueng (80) encouraged the legends to continue taking care of them and never to abandoned them.

“We feel much love and a sense of belonging when we see our children coming to look after us. It is heartwarming because a boy child does not always do what they just did. I urge them to pray and fear God so that they can become better fathers in their families,” said Sebueng.

A representative from the Tembisa Old Age Home, Sonto Maseko, said they appreciate the generous donation made by the Tembisa Legends Sports Development.

“We pray to God to give you more so that you can also give back. We would appreciate people just coming by to visit the seniors, even if there is nothing to give. They need your love and support,” added Maseko.

Several of the Tembisa soccer legends congratulate Marcus Mphafudi on his award.

During the occasion, Tumelo Mofokeng, a former Mamelodi Sundowns player and Marcus Mphafudi, former player of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, were both awarded certificates in recognition of their ongoing contributions and hard work as leaders in the community.

Mphafudi said he was not expecting the award and he does appreciate the gift.”I am speechless; however, I am elated for being recongised by the development,” added Mphafudi.
