Community tip off leads to arrest of suspected business robber

After searching they found the man in possession of a firearm with five live rounds of ammunition

A thirty-nine-year-old man from Mqantsa section was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and business robbery committed in May.

Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said members of the dog unit had received information about a man in possession of a firearm at Mqantsa Section .

“During the early hours of July 26, the SAPS’ dog unit went to a house in the area. They knocked at the door and were allowed in.

After searching they found the man in possession of a firearm with five live rounds of ammunition. They requested the firearm licence. The suspect failed to produce a licence.

He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm. It was also established he was involved in a robbery on Nyarhi Street in Oakmoor. He and his friends had robbed the owner of the shop of an undisclosed amount of money,” said Captain Ralidzhivha.

“It was alleged that one of the suspects came to the shop to buy airtime for five rand. He gave the cashier R10. He immediately claimed he gave the cashier R20. While they were busy arguing about the money, seven other suspects entered the shop brandishing a rifle and pistols.

“The shop owner was taken to the office where the suspects robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash. A security officer who came in was also robbed of his firearm. The suspects left the scene in an unknown mode of transport,” said Captain Ralidzhivha.
