Women do not only belong in the kitchen
‘We want you in the planning processes of the infrastructure sector because that is the driver of the country's economy’
Clr Dora Mlambo, a member of the Mayoral Committee for Social Services has called on women in Ekurhuleni to take up prominent spaces in the mainstream economy.
Speaking in Vosloorus at the women infrastructure summit, Mlambo said women must seize opportunities to take charge of male dominated sectors. She added they should refrain from only offering catering services.
“When you focus on catering, you are affirming a patriarchal view that a woman’s role remains in the kitchen. There is nothing wrong with offering catering services but it shouldn’t be a focus reserved for women.
“We want you in the planning processes of the infrastructure sector because it is the driver of the country’s economy,” she told the 200 delegates.
Mlambo told women that Ekurhuleni’s Business Economic Facilitation Network Centre (EBFN) in Kempton Park was well placed to assist them to develop businesses that would enjoy an equitable distribution of opportunities.
The centre is a co-ordinated business support structure that has partnered with various companies to provide mentorship, linkages to relevant stakeholders and financing intervention for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) as well as co-operatives.
The centre, situated at the corner of Voortrekker and Monument roads in Kempton Park, is open from 8am until 4.30pm. Women can reach the centre on 011 999 3516/20.
