Bible Society raises over R247 000 from Ride for Braille Bibles
The group stopped at two disadvantaged communities along the way to hand out Bibles and children's literacy books
THE Bible Society has raised over R247 000 from their Ride for Braille Bibles.
On September 3 at 7am a congregation of 12 people, nine of them cyclists, embarked on a 762km journey to Durban to raise funds for Braille Bibles.
Accompanied by two Alpha Security vehicles, sponsored by the company itself, the cyclists took turns along the way, with only two of them, including Dr Steve Dalgety (63), a shareholder at Alpha Security, riding the full distance.
Every night, after a full day of exhausting riding, they would sleep over in the town where they stopped.
“We had a couple of stops along the way, including attending a church service in Vereeniging on the same day we departed. We also handed out Bibles at disadvantaged communities we encountered along the way,” explained Past George Thompson.
On September 5, they reached Kestell where they handed over Bibles and Bible-based children’s literacy books to a disadvantaged school.
During the five-day trip they also came across a group of four cyclists in Pietermaritzburg who escorted them to Ashburton, where the crew handed out Bibles.
“In Camperdown we also gave away Bibles and Bible-based literacy books. The literacy books are for children whose parents cannot afford nursery school.”
On September 8 the cyclists finally completed the trip when they arrived in Durban at 3pm where they were met by the Durban Bible House as well as friends and family of the cycling team.
The money raised will allow them to purchase about 80 Braille Bibles for blind people.
“We still have promises pledged that need to be finalised. People are also still welcome to make more donations.
“Thank you to everyone who contributed to the initiative. We also want to give a big thank you to all the places that accommodated us and made our trip friendlier and easier, including the church in Vereeniging and the school in Kestell which provided refreshments for the team.”
