Discover Dinokeng at conservation society’s meeting
It is a private/public initiative for which planning and development started in the early 2000s
DINOKENG Game Reserve will be in the spotlight at the next evening meeting of Modderfontein Conservation Society when Tamboti Bush Lodge owner Derrick Cochran presents Discover Dinokeng (and maybe the big five at close quarters).
The meeting takes place at Modderfontein Town Hall, 1 Casino Road at 7.30pm on October 19.
Derrick’s quick wit and wry sense of humour make him an entertaining speaker. His presentation is backed up by some great photography, both still and video. It is also sprinkled generously with a range of fascinating anecdotes relating to both animal and human behaviour within the reserve.
Dinokeng, which means ‘place of rivers’, is described as “the first free-roaming big five residential game reserve in Gauteng – and probably in the world – next to an urbanised area.”
It is a private and public initiative for which planning and development started in early 2000. It was officially opened in September 2011 after the introduction of four of the big five. The last of the big five, the buffalo, was introduced in late 2012 and a self-drive route was opened in December 2014.
The reserve is just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg in Hammanskraal.
