Church pays homage to its elderly members
A community that does not take care of its elders lacks purpose
The Free United Church of Christ celebrated their elderly members of the congregation on October 22.
Church leader Reverend Isaac Namane said the church was thanking God for blessing its elders who have reached the age of 80 and beyond.
“God must bless our elders to grow even older. Few churches have elders who are above 80 years of age. Youth constitute a large number in many churches. The presence of the elders in our church is a blessing for us. It is the first time we are doing this kind of celebration and it will continue every year,” said Rev Namane.
He said the idea was conceived by the church council and as planned, became a big success.
“Next time it will be bigger than today. I am very happy with the support we got from the church as a whole. This should set an example to the youth that if the youth lives in God and if they live in the mercy of the Lord, they can reach the same age our elders do.”
Rev Namane said the elders were presented with different presents and he thanked God for everything.
“A community that does not take care of its elders lacks purpose,” said the programme organiser Ann Selatela.
One of the beneficiaries, Letti Hleza, said she was very happy with the gesture.
“I have attended the church for many years and the church has been good to me. This assures me that when I pass on, I will be given a dignified send off,” said Hleza.
Elders ended the day with happy smiles on their faces as they took packs of presents home.
