There might be light at the end of the rabbit burrow at Benoni Bunny Park.
Tania Forrest-Smith, Ward 27 committee member, told Benoni City Times the remaining rabbits at the park all have homes.
She said three permanent homes have been found, two of which are on private plots and another on a golf course. Forrest-Smith said the park’s bunnies, which she estimates do not exceed 1 000 in number, should be rehomed within the next few weeks, after the municipality approved adoption requests.
She said five people will be responsible for sexing the rabbits, an idea presented to her by the City Times, which was thought of by community member Stephen Rehbock.
The sexed animals will then be sent to the locations and should ensure that breeding won’t take place.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the municipality is still committed to sterilising up to 1 000 rabbits.
