UPDATE: Ninety-nine meter taxi drivers arrested on R21 and R24 following protest

Over 90 meter taxi drivers were arrested following Friday morning’s blockades on the R21 and R24.

This comes after traffic was brought to a standstill on both the R21 and R24 by protesting drivers which also hampered access to OR Tambo International Airport.

EXPRESS spoke to Lt Col Lungelo Dlamini, spokesperson of SAPS Gauteng, who said; “Nine-nine people have been arrested and are being charged with public violence. The situation is back to normal and no injuries were reported.

Kempton Park SAPS members were also on the scene.

“The members impounded about 70 vehicles alleged to be that of meter taxis owners and two vehicles alleged to be Uber taxis,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

“One of the vehicles was burnt while one had damage.

“The suspects will appear in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.”

Both the R21 and R24 are open for traffic.

“The situation is back to normal and no injuries were reported,” said Dlamini.”
