A 48-year-old man was found guilty in Tembisa Regional Court and sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 12-year-old girl.
The man appeared in court on October 16.
According to Tembisa SAPS communications officer Const Patricia Mgijima the aunt of the victim said on November 9, 2013, she noticed changes in her niece’s behaviour. The girl was 12 years old at the time.
“She sat down with the girl and asked her if everything was alright. The girl started to explain to her that one of the tenants known to her had been calling her to his room and sleeping with her since August 2013.
“The complainant immediately took her niece to Ivory Park SAPS. A case of rape was opened and on further investigation by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, it was found the child had indeed been sexually assaulted.
“The suspect was arrested that same day,” said Mgijima.
Tembisa SAPS’ acting station commander, Col Makhumisane, congratulated the investigating officer for ensuring that the man was put behind bars.
