‘Robbery’ at furniture store allegedly an inside job

Couple behind bars and goods valued at R60 000 recovered.

A female employee (37) of a furniture store on Central Avenue was nabbed for defeating the ends of justice after she was allegedly involved in a robbery at the store.

She and her boyfriend were both arrested in Kathelong on Thursday morning and the goods were recovered.

Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson, said the woman opened a case on October 17, alleging they were robbed at gunpoint by two unknown suspects at the shop. Six laptops, two hi-fi sets, four television sets, one base and mattress, two double-door refrigerators, two gas stoves and one microwave oven, valued at R60 000, were taken.

“On December 14, at about 7am, an intensive investigation by the Ekurhuleni North task team led to the arrest of the employee. The investigation also led to the recovery of the goods in Kathlehong and the arrest of the employee’s boyfriend. More arrests are expected as investigations continue,” Mtshali said.

The cluster commander, Maj Genl Vincent Leshabane, praised the team for the sterling job as this is seen as a breakthrough. Several furniture shops have been victims of robberies and this will deter other employees from committing similar crimes.
