Great-granny’s school journey ends

The family says the day has a special meaning for them

WHEN Gerrie Nel of Birchleigh North looked forward to her 82nd birthday, which she celebrated on December 6, she did not know that it will be on the same day as Ingo Schubert (13), her great-grandson’s, last day at primary school.

Nel has been responsible for transporting Ingo to school since he was in grade one at Laerskool Van Riebeeck Park Primary.

From next year Ingo will be going to Hoërskool Jeugland and will no longer be transported by his great-grandmother.

The family said the day was special to everyone.

Nel said it was also an emotional day for both, as their journey had now come to an end.

“This is quite a special day for me and my great-grandson. I have been taking care of him since he started school. Now he finishes his primary school journey on my birthday,” she said.
