Community unites through Christmas party

Two hundred children of Terenure and Kempton Park West enjoyed the annual Christmas party held at a park on Opstal Street on December 16.

This year’s theme incorporated the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children.

The event was sponsored by Afriforum, the CPF, Norkem Park SAPS and security patrolmen in the area.

Coordinator Marinda Goncalves said the event also had an educational purpose in keeping with the 16 Days of Activism, to teach children who to turn to when they face problems.

“We as Afriforum and volunteers of the CPF are aiming to show the community that it does not matter what association one is affiliated to, we want to work together to keep our community and our children safe,” Goncalves said.

Goncalves said the Christmas party helped put smiles on many children’s faces.

She said donations were made to children up to 18 years old.

“We have also made different meals for the children. We have made chicken stews, beef stews, boerie rolls, pap and rice.

“We are doing this as a rainbow nation, by feeding everybody.

“All through the year, we patrol and keep this area safe. Now we are simply trying to bring the community together, so that they can understand that we need to work together for each and every one of us to feel safe.”

Lukas Erasmus, chairman of Afriforum, said: “The whole purpose of this Christmas event is to show love for the children and those who are less fortunate.

“We are handing out sweets packets, gifts and food.

“We are doing this in order for people to see that we care about the community and the children in this area.

“When we stand together as one, we will be able to achieve a lot.”
