uMkhonto weSizwe Party candidate Fikile (Fika) Beauty Mokwana says residents need a ward representative who listens to their concerns, communicates with the City of Ekurhuleni and provides regular feedback.

Her stated priorities include crime, potholes, illegal dumping, housing, education and healthcare, as well as improving access to employment and economic opportunities.

Mokwana says she would record service-delivery complaints, obtain reference numbers, follow up with the relevant municipal departments and keep residents informed about progress and delays.

Here, she explains her priorities and how she would approach the role if elected.

1. Please introduce yourself to residents. Who are you, and what experience, skills or community involvement do you believe are relevant to serving as a ward councillor?

My name is Fikile (Fika) Mokwana, and I am standing as a ward councillor candidate in Ward 15 for the 2026 Local Government Elections.

My priorities include addressing poverty, supporting job opportunities, improving access to housing, education and healthcare, and building stronger communities.

2. Why have you decided to stand for election in this ward? What motivated you to put yourself forward as a candidate?

I am standing because I believe residents deserve a local representative who listens to their concerns and raises them through the appropriate municipal processes.

I want to focus on community needs and work towards practical, fair and accountable responses.

3. What do you believe are the three biggest challenges currently facing your ward?

Important challenges include crime, the hijacking of buildings, businesses that may be operating illegally or without the required documentation, illegal dumping, potholes, housing needs, and access to quality education and healthcare.

These priorities should be considered alongside residents’ feedback and local service-delivery concerns to establish the most urgent needs in Ward 15.

4. If elected, what would be your top three priorities during your first year in office?

My priorities would be to engage residents to identify urgent needs, advocate for initiatives that expand access to jobs and economic opportunities, and raise housing and essential-service concerns with the responsible authorities.

I would also focus on crime, fixing potholes and addressing illegal dumping.

Progress should be reviewed regularly and communicated honestly to residents.

5. What specific steps would you take to address the biggest service-delivery challenges in the ward?

I would record residents’ reports, submit them to the relevant City of Ekurhuleni departments, obtain reference numbers and track responses.

I would follow up on unresolved matters, escalate delays through the proper channels and share updates with affected residents, including when solutions depend on municipal planning or funding.

6. What would you do to improve communication between the ward councillor, residents and the City of Ekurhuleni?

I would encourage regular community meetings, accessible ways for residents to report concerns, and clear updates on matters raised with the municipality.

Communication should explain what has been reported, which department is responsible, what response has been received and what remains outstanding.

7. How would you ensure that residents’ concerns are followed up and that they receive feedback on issues reported to you?

I would keep a register of reported issues, dates, reference numbers, responsible departments and follow-up actions.

I would provide feedback through community meetings and appropriate communication channels, protect residents’ personal information, and explain delays or obstacles rather than leaving people without an update.

8. What do you believe is one issue in the ward that has not received enough attention, and what would you do about it if elected?

Economic hardship and the need for more local job opportunities deserve focused attention.

I would engage residents and relevant stakeholders to identify barriers, share information about legitimate opportunities and advocate for municipal initiatives that support local economic development.

The specific needs of Ward 15 should guide this work.

9. How would you measure your performance as a ward councillor? What should residents be able to hold you accountable for at the end of your term?

Residents should be able to assess my performance through accessible communication, regular community engagement, documented follow-ups and transparent updates on unresolved issues.

I should be held accountable for how consistently I represent residents, raise concerns, engage the relevant departments and report progress and limitations.

10. Why should residents consider you when deciding who to vote for as their ward councillor?

Residents should consider my stated focus on poverty reduction, job opportunities, housing, education, healthcare and stronger communities.

I believe a ward councillor should listen respectfully, communicate honestly, follow up on concerns and represent residents fairly. Voters should assess candidates on their priorities.
