Men for Development in South Africa (MEDSA) educate men about responsible alcohol consumption.
On November 25 Mahlangu’s tavern in Phomolong partnered with Medsa, Rabie Ridge SAPS and other stakeholders to encourage men to spare money to take care of their families.
Rabie Ridge SAPS communications officer Captain Mofana Matsobane Masela said the tavern owner who used to be a Community Policing Forum (CPF) member decided not to only sell alcohol to people to raise awareness about the dangers posed to families due to irresponsible alcohol abuse. “Alcohol consumers must not spend all their money on alcohol but spare some money to look after their wives and children.
“We need NGOs like Medsa and the media to make a noise against the abuse of women and children.
“This abuse of women and children should stop,” said Captain Masela.
He said Rabie Ridge SAPS supported the event to fulfill a governmental mandate and to really support the prevention of domestic violence.
“We also find alcohol consumption contributed to assaults and murder which is a problem in this community.
“We as Rabie Ridge SAPS therefore condemn alcohol abuse that brings about additional problems like drug abuse and sexual abuse which denies our children the opportunity to grow in a healthy environment and also contributes to the increase of crime.”
The event’s aim was also to encourage men to disclose when they feel abused.
Men were taught how to prevent and find the cause of abuse in their homes.
“They were also educated on ways to socialise and enjoy themselves without abusing alcohol.
The attendants were happy to engage in these issues and they suggested that this should be a frequent gathering to give men an opportunity to learn and know about all types of abuse. The event was a success.
