Spice book puts food on the table for the less fortunate
For every one book she sells, Annusha Govender feeds 10 hungry children.
AT first sight, Annusha Govender appears to be an ordinary shop owner, but what sets her apart is that she is a caring entrepreneur who, through her humanitarian efforts, helps to feed those who are less fortunate.
By selling her recipe book, Amma’s Spice – South Africa’s Mother of Spice, Govender (43) raises money to continue her good work.
She says caring for people was nurtured in her by her grandmother, who was also passionate about the well-being of humanity.
She published her book in 2011 in order to pass on this legacy while honouring what her mother and grandmother instilled in her.
“This is an informative book about spices that also gives health tips to people. It has 100 recipes and allows me to give back to the needy,” Govender said.
For every one book she sells, she feeds 10 hungry children. So far, Govender has helped to feed Aids orphans in Alexandra, Children of the Dawn and Actonville Primary School learners.
Others who have benefited come from as far afield as Tzaneen. Beneficiaries include individuals and temporary foster kids.
Govender aims to grow her charity. “We want to continue being the place whose primary aim is to help the needy and we want to create happiness for our customers.
“I was taught not to be selfish and to care for people,” Govender added. “This is a perfect thing that will allow us to achieve that. My whole family is passionate about living up to the legacy.”
