Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld High School’s matrics achieved a 95% per cent pass rate in 2017.
Its top performing learners were Bohlale Mathabatha, who scored six distinctions, Mervyn Shoko with five distinctions and Drucel Tshimanga, also with five distinctions.
Margaret Wrigley, the principal of the school, said this year’s results had improved following a dip in 2016.
Wrigley said the school is proud to have achieved 144 distinctions.
“In 2016, we got a 91% pass rate. Normally we range between 95% and 96%, but the upper trend is what makes us happy,” Wrigley said.
She said there were many learners who worked harder towards the end of the year. “We are happy with the learners who worked to achieved what they aimed for.”
Bohlale, who achieved six distinctions, said: “Every day I made sure I worked. Sometimes it was not an easy thing to do. As for my physical science marks, I was quite amazed, as I had never got a distinction in the past terms, not even 75 per cent. But getting it made me so happy.”
She said an important thing that also contributed to the outcome was her faith.
“Even when things were difficult, I held on. Sometimes, I felt like just settling for lesser marks but my faith and resilience helped me to push on.
“All I did was to change how I study. In the beginning, I used to procrastinate and get overwhelmed by my school load. I used to be a person who only studied at night before a test or exam, but then I realised that was not going to help me get flying marks.”
